Announcing Multiplex as Social Value Pioneers

Posted 24th January 2019

Social Value UK are proud to announce Multiplex as Social Value Pioneers. Multiplex is a global construction company and has been delivering iconic projects around the world for over 55 years. They are focused on achieving long-term, sustainable growth while driving industry standards in safety, efficiency and quality.

Multiplex build collaborative relationships with our clients and stakeholders to achieve common goals and create enduring benefits for our people, projects and the communities in which they work. Multiplex understand the importance of engaging with all of their project stakeholders to deliver a positive impact to help deliver vibrant and prosperous communities. Over the last eight years, Multiplex has been working hard to deliver tangible benefits through their focus on the communities they build in. Multiplex are now ready to take their approach to the next level by setting a more inclusive strategy for social value through the development of their social value model, systems and processes.

Why do you think social value is important? In your organisation, your industry or in wider society?

Construction projects provide a powerful driver for change in local communities. It is well-recognised among clients, main contractors and local authorities that construction projects are no longer just about creating great places for people to live and work but have the ability to shape communities and change people’s lives. It is essential that a core part of any construction project works towards creating economic and social value and delivers a positive impact on local communities for the long-term. Focusing on social value allows us to demonstrate the added value that Multiplex brings to local communities. Our approach is about creating a shared objective with all of our stakeholders – building capacity internally, within our supply chain, for our clients and throughout the construction sector.

Does your organisation have a background in social value/social accounting/SROI?

We have been recording and reporting on our community benefits since 2010. Earlier this year, we worked with Social Value Portal to create a social value report based on our UK community outcomes for the period 2015-2017. The Social Value Report highlighted that in this three-year period, we created £430 million in social value from our projects. The report was based on our key outcomes for local jobs created, local SMEs gaining contractors on our projects, as well as up-skilling the workforce, engaging with school pupils, hosting volunteering days and raising funds for local charities.

What are your plans for your SVUK membership?

SVUK membership will allow us to fully understand and provide a structured framework for our approach and to support us to embed social value throughout our business. The overarching aspiration is that the SVUK membership will help us to develop our current
thinking, to gain valuable insights into social value measurement, develop our social value model, team and to provide assurance and credibility for our future measurement and reporting.

Andrew Ridley-Barker, Operations Director – Europe said “Multiplex is thrilled to be joining Social Value UK as Pioneer members. We have been working hard over the last eight years to consistently outperform and create a positive impact for the local communities in which we work. We are now ready to take our approach to the next level by setting a more inclusive strategy for
social value. We will create a structured framework that will allow us to embed social value throughout our business.”

Paul Maguire, Commercial Director – Europe added “SVUK membership will help us to develop our current thinking to gain valuable insights into social value measurement, develop our social value team, and provide assurance and credibility to our social value model.”
